I didn’t plan this. It just kinda happened. I swear.
I’ve watched anime on-and-off ever since I was a kid, but it wasn’t until college when I really got into it. I credit much of that to MyAnimeList (MAL); it was all too easy to go on a hyperlink journey and end the night with 10 new anime on my watch list. I started with Gintama/Fullmetal Alchemist/Death Note that winter break, and by the end of the year I watched a hundred more.
Along the way, I also ended up talking to some nice (and some not-so-nice) strangers, occasionally veering into the thousand-word posts that, while intellectually stimulating, took a lot out of me. I was (and still am) a cautious writer; I would spend hours a night researching my points and then write and re-rewrite my posts.
But that all ended a few years ago. I just didn’t have the time to keep it up. Having a full-time job meant less time outside of work. I didn’t give up on anime though; I just keep watching, but did less of the thinking/debating/putting words on paper thing.
Recently I wanted to try blogging again. I guess I’ve more or less settled down in a good point in life, not that I have any more free time than before. The one thing that’s been lacking in my life has been creativity, and it’s never too late to try my hands on writing again, seeing how it’s singularly the easiest path to creation I know of (Painting? Music? I’m even less talented in those). Ironically enough, creative writing was the one assignment I hated the most back in school. Life really does give you lemons.
And so I ended up on the ubiquitous WordPress. As useful as MAL is at searching and tracking anime/manga, it is just a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad platform for blogging (as well as reviews ever since they removed the unhelpful button). Also, my, er, good friend
Kopo Kapodaco runs a decent blog over at The Visualist’s Veranda, which, I’m ashamed to say, I’m just a tad envious of.
Before I turn grandpa on yall and bore you to death with my war stories, I’ll just end with some visions I have for this blog.
- Continue to flesh out the site design-wise.
- Post my first anime review.
- Expand into other interests. I don’t plan on this being just an anime blog.
- Include some news commentary and other content. I don’t plan on this being just a review blog. In fact this might eventually take up the bulk of my writing.
- Keep blogging, consistently, for a year. I know, this is surprisingly hard. But I believe in you, myself!!!!
